King of the Jungle

I know it’s been a while between posts. After all of the Christmas crocheting, I took a little break!

I found this pattern from Amigurumi World, Seriously Cute Crochet and I couldn’t resist. It’s the second pattern I have followed from this book and the instructions are super easy to follow. What I also like about this book is that most patterns come with different sized patterns – so you could make a Pappa Lion as well as a Baby Lion. Sweeeeeeet.

How to make a Magic Ring…

1:48 pm in How To; Videos by amigurumi girl

Making a magic ring is important to master because a lot of Amigurumi patterns start out this way. Check out this easy ‘how to’ video;

Types of yarn…what to choose?

8:16 pm in Hooks & Yarn by amigurumi girl

Confused? It can get like that. Not a lot of Amigurumi patterns advise you on what type, weight, style etc yarn to use for your projects. There are so many different types that it can get a little bit overwhelming to decide.

Personally, I use either a 4ply or 8ply acrylic wool. I find that acrylic wool is a bit easier to manage as it doesn’t slip & stays in shape better. The hooks I use to match are usually 2.5 – 3.5 (metric). Best to try it out, you’ll find what you like in no time.

Some patterns may refer to ‘worsted yarn’, Wikipedia explains it better than I can. The term “worsted” is often applied to any yarn spun from fibres three inches in length or longer that have been carded or combed, and spun, not just wool. Acrylic and other yarns can be called “worsted,” as much a reference to the weight of the yarn as the production process. Just keep in mind, the majority of yarn you find instore should be worsted, altough they never mention it on the label.

Crochet Hook Conversion Chart

Crochet hook sizes vary by country so if you get a pattern and you just don’t understand what size crochet hook they’re telling you to use, you can check out this handy conversion chart to help you (click to enlarge).

Generally speaking, I use a 3.00mm to a 3.50mm hook for my amigurumi but it depends on what type of yarn you are using.

Don’t worry to much about gauge either, as long as your stitches are consistent, you’re bound to get a great result. Once you create a couple of  projects, you’ll get a feel for it…..promise!

The Festive Season

11:49 pm in Projects by amigurumi girl

Anyone out there feeling festive? I’ve realised the date and am thinking I’d better get cracking if I want to finish all of the Christmas decorations I want to crochet for my family and friends. I’ve set myself a hard task but am confident I can do it. I want to crochet 15 hanging ornaments to put on the tree; 5 x Angels, 5 x Santa Claus’ & 5 x Mrs Claus’.

I’ve found my base pattern from this really great website Lion Brand Yarn - you can search for loads of different types of patterns, they have everything! The trick is, I’ll be adding my own twists & ideas. A sneak peak of the angel is here for you, it’s not finished yet! More to come on this….

So, I went a little crazy and bought a few books with Amigurumi patterns! This is where I got the pattern for Pinky Ellarina (I named her myself) and there are some really great, cute (true to the name) and colourful ideas to get you excited. Patterns are very easy to follow, although I have only made one to date, I would recommend this book!
